A Midnight Stroll

Took place September 2 - 3, 2007
by Jeffrey Pierce

Ghost stories. Tales of the fae. Mystical happenings that are reported but there's never any proof other than the storyteller swearing that their anecdote rings true.

That may not be the case anymore.

As a shaman, I live a pretty active life in the Dreamtime. Sometimes I clearly remember the experiences, sometimes I don't. Over the years I've been visited by spirits in the middle of the night, had beings physically manifest at the foot of my bed, caught invisible creatures in my bare hands, and had students report that I've appeared in their home hundreds or thousands of miles away from where I was sleeping at the time.

When I awoke on the morning of September 3, 2007 I was greeted by a trail of footprints coming out of a ceiling eight feet (2.43 meters) off the floor and wandering down the wall all the way to the floor. The footprints trailed down the wall, went behind a heavy picture frame which has hung there for years, and the majority of footprints were found behind the frame almost as if the owner or owners were solid enough to contact the wall, but intangible enough that they passed through the picture frame. It almost seems as if they had trouble negotiating the frame as some of the the prints behind the picture are smeared.

A composite of photographs showing the disbursment of footprints on the wall.

It's not the first time this sort of thing has happened to me. There are at least two other occurances where footprints were left on my walls and ceiling in places that would be difficult or impossible to leave such prints without significant amounts of assistance. I've had partners over the years wake to find me levitating above the bed and my bedroom is at least twenty degrees Fahrenheit warmer in the winter than any room in the house (to the point that I've been known to have to open windows to cool the room to a bareable level.)

footprints

A close-up of some of the footprints.

Look at the print in the upper left of the above photograph. It's not mine - in fact, it's clearly not human in origin. There are only four toes and the distance between the toes and the pad of the foot is much too wide to be created by Homo sapiens. To be thorough, I went through all of my tracking books and the print doesn't match any animal found on the North American continent - not that a wild animal would be walking down the wall in the middle of the night!

footprints

A high-contrast view of the footprints behind the picture frame.

I increased the contrast in the next photo so that it's easier to see the footprints. The clear print that we're discussing in the above paragraph can be found just below the picture hanging bracket near the center of the photograph. That's right - the footprint in question is one of those found going behind the heavy picture frame. What's more is that the top of the print is 5 feet 2 inches (1.57 m) off the ground and walking down the wall.

All of the pictures in this photograph are found behind the hanging picture frame. It's also the highest concentration of footprints and the only portion of the wall where the footprints are smeared (like the one in the lower left.) This is what led me to believe that whatever came into the room was physical enough to make contact with the wall but had problems negotiating the picture frame that it encountered hanging on the wall.

footprints

The footprints are small, only 3" across.

The prints are also much smaller than those that would be left by a human being. As you can see in the above true color photograph, the prints are only 3 inches (7.62 cm) wide. Whatever left them was much smaller than a human being. Is it coincidence that a few weeks later I was invited to begin teaching the fae in an old sacred site that I'd worked to heal? Maybe. The prints could be completely unrelated to the event, but it's certainly an interesting coincidence.

footprints

The footprints near the 8 feet tall ceiling.

Whatever left the prints left the room when the event was over. While the vast majority of prints walk down the wall as if entering the room from the ceiling, there's a single print, 7 feet 6 inches (2.28 meters) off the floor that's facing the opposite direction, heading toward the ceiling rather than the floor.

Prints were left a second time in December 2007, an event that I blogged about in early January 2008.
