Jeffrey's Blog: Seeing The Road Ahead

I generally keep the updates on my personal Facebook profile separate from the work I do through the Old Ways and Soul Centered Humanity pages on Facebook. The last few days, I've found my offline world dominated by the lessons before me. So today, I skipped that rule and updated my status as follows:
Much of that statement was formed while running errands this morning, with long drives in the car from place to place.
I often have conversations with myself in my head. It's an excellent technique for sorting through thoughts and polishing up half-formed concepts. In the midst of one of those internal intellectual debates, some part of myself offered the following question:
"If we're always going to be challenged to stretch beyond our comfort zone and embrace lessons that are difficult for us to grasp, what's the point of it all? Why do something that, no matter how hard you work, the next lesson is going to be just as challenging as the previous one?"
I thought about that for a moment. It was a valid question. Why do this at all if beyond each mountain we climb there's yet another mountain waiting in an endless procession?
The answer was simple.
We do it because of love.
With each step forward on our path, we embrace more love. Not only are we capable of more fully loving others, but we're able to be more fully loved ourselves. The joy, the acceptance, the love we're capable of experiencing grows with each step. And while having that ability challenged may be part of our lesson, the capacity to experience the fullness of beauty in each moment makes the entire process worth it.
So that's what I answered myself with - we do it because of love. Not just the love we get or the love we give, but because each step forward we embrace a larger aspect of that giddy, awe inspiring, take your breath away even in a simple moment, kind of love.
And I don't know about you, but to me, that makes the journey worth every bit of effort.
